Routines are important because they help give structure and meaning to our lives. Routines also help keep us on track no matter how hectic and unstructured the rest of our day is, and they set our course.

An effective evening routine for middle school and high schoolers who need a mid-semester reset

Everyone can build an effective morning routine that works for them! The key to maintaining a good routine is consistency and evaluation of when things in your routine are not helping you get to your goal of getting out the door on time-stress free. Here is an excellent outline of a morning routine that is entirely customizable.

The Night Before School

  1. Put everything you will need in your backpack and set it by the door (computer, notebooks, pencils, pens, and other supplies.)
  2. Check the weather and decide what to wear the next day.
  3. Have your clothes laid out and ready for tomorrow.
  4. Pack your lunch and put it in the fridge.
    • Extra tip: leave a sticky note on the fridge reading “don’t forget your lunch!”
  5. Shower and dry your hair
    • This tip is optional as some prefer to shower in the morning. If you plan to shower in the morning, add 15-20 minutes to your morning routine.
